What is a gang?

Definition – unlawful gang means a group however organized that a) is comprised of three or more persons; and b) has one of its main purposes or main activities the facilitation or commission of one or more indictable offences, that, if committed, would likely result in the direct receipt of a material benefit, including financial benefit, by the group or by one of the persons who constitute the group.

Why do people join gangs?

  • Money! Jewelry! Respect! Power!
  • A sense of belonging
  • A result of where you live (neighborhood)
  • Protection
  • Forced into it
  • Boredom

  • Upset your family
  • No travel
  • No job
  • No sports
  • Jail
  • Loss of Life

What to Avoid

  • Bad friends – know who your good friends are and keep them. Be mindful of people you don't know well that may want to cause trouble
  • Bad areas – if you have a feeling that an area is not safe, then avoid it! Use your 'gut' instinct.
  • Glorification of gang life – don't believe what you see on TV and the internet. It may look like the gang life is glamorous, but in the end there is no glory.
  • Close minded mentality – there is so much to offer in Bermuda and around the world. Have the desire to visit other countries and experience new things.
  • Drugs and alcohol – many gang members use drugs and alcohol from an early age. Stay away from both.

What You Can Do

  • Sporting Activities – every season offers something different
  • Youth Groups – look arounds your area for a youth organization
  • Extra curricular school activities – Look at what clubs your school can offer you.
  • Get your education and finish school – this is key!
