Bermuda’s Annual Celebration of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

All over the world, technology is recognised as today’s greatest enabler of progress. Bermuda’s Department of E-Commerce within the Ministry of Economic Development recognises this principle and consistently promotes initiatives that encourage technology innovation and e-entrepreneurship. By partnering with public and private entities, it assists in bolstering progress through technology, specifically by empowering the Island’s entrepreneurs with the tools which they need to launch e-businesses and develop their own success stories.

Year after year, Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) takes the Island by storm in November. With a full calendar targeting current and potential entrepreneurs, it encourages, recognises, celebrates, congratulates, and inspires the Island’s entrepreneurs in a frenzy of happenings throughout the community. Through the variety of encounters, they meet like-minded people, network with subject-matter experts, harness technology, and unleash their ideas.  As a result, Bermuda has won the “Champion Catalyser” award several times at the yearly Global Entrepreneurship Congress.

The Department of E-Commerce provides sponsorship and other forms of assistance for two premier GEW events:

  • The Technology Innovation Awards, most often called the TechAwards, which are the Island’s opportunity to celebrate the successful –and sometimes creative- use of technology in Bermuda. They allow the Department of E-Commerce to recognize those who have provided notable technology solutions to Bermuda and its residents. Unfailingly, every year, the winners demonstrate that the Island has what it takes when it comes to technological innovation and achievement.
  • PitchTECH, which is the Rocket Pitch category dedicated to new and innovative technologies or e-business ideas with a technology focus. The Rocket Pitch competition gives individuals the opportunity to pitch a business idea in a bid to win seed funding and business services to launch their company.

It is important for the Department of E-Commerce to ensure that technology can play an important part in empowering Bermuda’s entrepreneur and to bring recognition to the winners of the various GEW challenges. Every time a Bermudian is given the opportunity to strive for success, they impress the community with their drive, creativity, and hard work. The technology-themed GEW events continue to show that in the right context, in a space where opportunity meets hard work, technology enables creativity and innovation to develop and grow strong business.
